A Beginner’s Guide to Home Projects

The process of building or renovating a home can be a positive experience if you have the right outlook and steps to successfully create the image you have in mind. With a couple tips and tricks, your dream home can be created.

  1. Realistic Measurement: At the start of your renovation process, you are going to be thrilled about the beauty of your future space. With the amount of ideas and thoughts running through your mind, you must remain realistic. Look at the area you have to work with and make a list of the must-haves you want. Once you have a list completed, an efficient project is to cut out paper in the size and shapes of each item you are adding or keeping. As you arrange each piece of paper around your space, you can see firsthand how furniture, tables and open room would fit into and fill the renovated area. You could also do this for walls if you are planning on replacement windows, paintings or mirrors.

  2. Organization: Whether it is the person you will be working with, your time frame, maintenance or what your space is going to look like, you must be organized. Keep a folder with tabs for each part of your renovation. This way you are able to keep all receipts organized for potential reference, for your taxes, as well as any to-do lists. There are also apps out there to keep your thoughts organized, such as Homezada or Adornably. Yes, there’s an app for that.

  3. Cleanliness: Keep the clutter of renovation to a minimum by always staying on top of cleaning. Purchase wall cleaners, floor covers or any extra paint you might need for touch ups along the way. Throughout your renovation, focus on cleaning replacement windows, doors and cover furniture to keep your space looking brand new. At the completion of your project, you will be pleased with a clean space that has been maintained through the entire process. Instead of mopping and dusting, you will be relaxing in your new space right away.

  4. Budget: Your budget is the biggest aspect of renovation. To stay on track, research endlessly to discover the best deals. Although you want to save money, you must research, read reviews or have a reference from a friend you trust to make sure the deal is worth the cash in your pocket. It would be painful to spend the entirety of your budget on a job that isn’t done right. Your money plan also comes into play when you are deciding on large purchases. Items like replacement windows could cost more on the front end. You may have to pick and decide between two huge items, or sacrifice multiple smaller details. Each move you make is important; the pieces you pick will make a statement in your space for years to come. Whatever your budget is, you must be ready for a thorough decision making process.
